About Uganda

Uganda, also known as the “Pearl of Africa” is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful countries in Africa. There is no better place to experience natural beauty and cultural diversity than Uganda, a country fortunate to have over 50 tribes dispersed across the land in their respective regions. Remarkably, all these tribes have different customs, beliefs, food, dressing, and dances but have learnt to live together. You will have the chance to visit Buganda Kingdom and Kasubi Tombs, Tooro Kingdom Palace, Ndere Troupe Cultural Centre, Igongo Cultural Centre, and many more. You will also have the time to see the Batwa people in Southwestern Uganda around Bwindi National Park.

With a variety of animal and birdlife, breathtaking landscapes and sceneries, great climate and warm people, there is surely something for everyone to look forward to. One of the major tourist sites is Bwindi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is 331 square kilometers situated in the southwest corner of Uganda, a region of volcanoes, jagged valleys, waterfalls, lakes, and dramatic mountain ranges popularly known as home to Mountain Gorillas. These rare great apes reside within the steep hills covered with thick forested vegetation. The forest has over 18 habituated Gorilla groups with 4 main groups that can be tracked from various trailheads. There is also rare forest elephant, giant forest hog and eleven kinds of primates, including red tailed and blue monkey, black and white colobus, baboons, and chimpanzee. You can also find forest antelopes and bush buck antelopes as well as over 200 species of butterflies. Birders come thousands of miles to see the more than 350 species that live within the forest. The park is impresses with a truly theatrical landscape and biodiversity.

When to Visit:

Uganda is an all year-round travel destination for tourists, due to its climate and positioning on the equator. The other factor making Uganda a great travel destination throughout the year is Lake Victoria and its unique weather patterns. Uganda mainly has two rainy seasons; the short season from October to November and the long rainy season starts from Mid-March to the end of May. The best months to visit are from June to September and from December to February due to the pleasant sunny weather. December is the busiest months of the year in most national parks with many travelers vacationing during this time, so it is advisable to book accommodation well in advance to avoid disappointments.

Food and Cuisines:

Uganda’s cuisine draws on Western, Arab and Asian influences and uses local produce including plantains, sweet and white potatoes, rice, corn, beans and cassava. International restaurants can be found in larger towns with Indian, Chinese, and Italian being the most popular. All hotels and lodges that accommodate international tourists offer a wide range of international cuisines to suit client’s preferences. Traditional foods include “Ugali” (made from maize flour) served with a stew of groundnuts (peanuts), beans, chicken or meat such as beef, goat or mutton. Game meat can be found on menus in some restaurants and at Safari Lodges. Fish including the Nile Perch or “Mputa”, and Tilapia are popular. Vegetarians are also covered as the Indian and Chinese restaurants generally offer a selection of vegetarian dishes.
