About Zanzibar

Zanzibar is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean situated on the Swahili coast, adjacent to Tanzania. The island is separated from the Tanzanian mainland by a channel. It consists of two large islands;

Unguja Island (also known as Zanzibar) and Pemba Island among many other smaller islands. Zanzibar island has a total population of about 980,000 people with about two thirds living on Unguja or island. Besides Zanzibar city, other towns on Unguja include Chaani, Mbweni, Nungwi among others. The people belong to diverse origins where the majority are the ethnic Swahili, some ethnic Arabs, Somalis and Indian people. Zanzibaris speak mostly a dialect of Swahili called Kiunguja which has a high percentage of Arabic loanwords, and enjoy the status of standard Swahili in other countries where it is spoken. Zanzibar is also named the world's oldest functioning Swahili city. Many local residents also speak Arabic, English and French to a smaller extent. Zanzibar's population is almost entirely Muslim, with a small Christian minority. Zanzibar cuisine is a journey through the Swahili culture. Authentic Zanzibari dishes provide the opportunity to experience tropical East Africa, with all the influence of India and the ancient Arab world, mingling seafood, fresh tropical fruits and rich spices for a taste of adventure.

The archipelago experiences a Tropical monsoon climate all year round. Being near to the Equator, the islands are warm all year round. The rainfall regime is split into two main seasons; a primary maximum in March, April and May & another rain peak in November and December. The months in between receive less rain, with a minimum in July. The warmest period is from December to March, during which the temperature hovers from 32°C to a maximum of 38°C.

The East African island is a breath-taking spot to escape from the world. You'll enjoy the crystal clear turquoise blue water, shallow sand and the many small nearly deserted islands that will linger in your memory for a lifetime. If you're wandering on what to do in Zanzibar, there are a lot of things to do and experience on this beautiful island. These may include visiting Stone town, a spice farm tour, Prison Island, beach hopping, visiting Cheetahs rock, Nakupenda Beach Nature reserve, visiting Jozani forest which is the last sanctuary in the world to see the Zanzibar red colobus monkey and many other mind-blowing sights.
