About Mauritius

The country is constituted of Mauritius Island and several outlying islands like Agalega islands, St. Brandon. The islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues, along with Reunion are part of the Mascarene Islands. The main island is surrounded by coral reefs and has sandy beaches, with fertile plains rising sharply to rocky mountains. Due to its volcanic origin, age, isolation and unique terrain, Mauritius is home to a diversity of flora and fauna and some of the world's rarest plants and animals.

Mauritius has a population of about 1.22million people attaining the second highest population in Africa. The islands of Mauritius, where most of the population is concentrated, hosts the capital and largest city, Port Louis. The Mauritian population follows Hinduism, followed by Christianity, Catholic and lastly Islam. The Mauritian population is multilingual; while Mauritian Creole is the mother tongue of most Mauritians, most of the people are also fluent in English and French. The cuisine of Mauritius is influenced by the tropical location of the island as well as the cultural diversity which characterizes the country. Mauritian cuisine is a blend of African, Chinese, French and Indian influences in the history of Mauritius. Spices are also a major component of Mauritian cuisine.

The Republic of Mauritius enjoys a mild tropical maritime climate throughout the year with a warm humid summer extending from November to April and a relatively cold dry winter from June to September.
