About Indonesia

Indonesia is the largest archipelago in Southeast Asia between the Indian and Pacific oceans. It consists of over 17000 islands including Java, greater Sunda islands of Sumatra, lesser Sunda islands of Bali of which more than 7000 are uninhabited. More than half of the country's population lives on Java Island. Indonesia shares maritime borders with Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Australia. Nature and culture are the prime attractions of Indonesian tourism. The country boasts of a unique combination of a tropical climate, a vast group of Islands and a long stretch of beaches.

Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country and the most populous in South Asia with about 275 million people. It is an ethnically diverse country with around 1300 distinct native ethnic groups. The Javanese are the largest ethnic group followed by the Sudanese, Batak among many others. The country's official language is Indonesian among 700 other local languages of which Javanese is the most widely spoken. Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim majority country although the government officially recognises six religions which vary from island to island. The Indonesian cuisine is one of the world's most diverse, vibrant, colourful and bursting with intense flavour. A number of regional cuisines exist, often based upon the indigenous culture and foreign influence. Rice is their staple food where some popular dishes include nasi goreng, gado-gado, sate and tumpeng which was selected as the national dish by the Ministry of Tourism.

The climate of Indonesia is almost entirely tropical, dominated by the tropical rain forest climate found in every large island in Indonesia. The climate is partly determined by its islands structure and its position astride the Equator, which assure high even temperatures. The archipelago has 2 seasons – a wet and dry season with no extremes of summer or winter. For most of Indonesia, the dry season falls between May and October and the wet season between November and April.

The Indonesian archipelago is a collection of islands that hold untold treasures in its diversity of cultures, landscapes and cities. Indonesia offers an adventure for everyone, from exploring ancient temples and hiking active volcanoes to diving in largely untouched waters. Indonesia is famous for its diverse and cultural islands from the tropical paradise of Bali, to the world's biggest, ancient and iconic temple of Borobudur, to the prestigious wildlife reserves like Komodo National Park and the enormous most active volcanic mountains. Visitors can also meander around the world's largest volcanic lake- Lake Toba, experience the culture in Ubud, hike mountain Rijani and Bromo, dive in Raja Ampat, explore and shop in Jakarta and so much more.
