About Seychelles

The Republic of Seychelles in the Indian Ocean is famous for its white sand beaches, majestic coral reefs and warm tropical climate. The archipelago comprises of about 115 coral and granite islands and 7 reclaimed islands that have been created subsequent to the publication of the constitution. Seychelles largest island is Mahè which is also home to the vast majority of the population while the majority of the islands are uninhabited and dedicated as natural reserves. The country is located off the eastern edge of the Somali sea neighbouring island countries and territories like Comoros, Mauritius, Madagascar and many others. Seychelles boasts the highest nominal per capita GDP of any African nation and is currently the only African country classified as a high-income economy by the World Bank.

With fewer than 100,000 people, Seychelles has the smallest population of any African country where about 90% of the population lives on Mahe Island & Praslin hosting the 2nd biggest number. People hailing from Seychelles are known as the Seychellois. Creole or Seselwa is the native mother tongue and English, French and Creole are recognised as the official national languages. More than three quarters of the population are Roman Catholics although there are some Anglicans, Christians of other denominations, Hindus and Muslims. The Seychellois culture has been shaped by a combination of European, African and Asian influences. The European influence is evidenced in the French language and Roman Catholicism. African influence is revealed in the local music, dance and Seselwa language and the Asian element is evident in the island's cuisine, business and trade. The staple foods of Seychelles include fish, sea food and shell fish dishes all cooked in several ways.

Seychelles has a tropical climate with daily temperatures between 24 and 30°C. The ocean temperature stays at around 26°C all year round. The island experiences rain from time to time due to its tropical location. The wettest months are generally December to January while June to August are the driest months of the year. There is no “best time” to travel to Seychelles as it experiences summer temperatures all year round although there is an incredible sea breeze that blows the ocean between May to September making the weather even more desirable for tourists.

As a nature lover’s paradise, Seychelles is a perfect kaleidoscope of natural splendours. The spectacular archipelago is famous for eco-tourism and is home to giant tortoises, over 200 species of birds, abundant marine life, lofty mountains, sizzling beaches, sparkling ocean water and lush green plantations. While in Seychelles, you can indulge in fun and exhilarating tours and activities like scuba diving, snorkelling, island and beach tours, shopping sprees, helicopter rides, city tour, rock climbing and hiking, meeting the rich wildlife and bird species and so much more.
