About Maldives

Maldives is an archipelagic state located in Southern Asia, situated in the Indian Ocean. The country is one of the world's most geographically dispersed sovereign states and the smallest Asian country consisting of 1,192 small coral islands and sand banks majority of which only 200 of them are inhabited. The country's unique geography is mesmerising to the human eye. It is endowed with reefs that offer bands of colour, tiny jewel like islands rimmed with the whitest of sand surrounded by the clearest shallow waters that one can imagine.

Maldives is the second least populous country in Asia. More than half of the population is considered rural with the exception of those living in Malé which is the capital and the most populated city in Maldives. The vast majority in Maldives belongs to the Maldivian ethnic group. The official language is an Indo- European language called Dhivehi or Maldivian although English, Arabic and Hindu are also spoken and the official religion is Islam. The Maldivian cuisine, also known as the Dhivehi cuisine, is the national cuisine of Maldivians that is mainly based on three items; coconuts, starches and fish.

                                                                                                                        Maldives is characterized by a warm and humid tropical monsoon climate. Because the Maldives has the lowest elevation of any country in the world, the temperature is constantly hot and often humid. Two seasons dominate Maldives weather; the dry season associated with the Northeast monsoon winds from December to March and the rainy season associated with the Southwest monsoon winds from May to August.
