About South Africa

South Africa is a diverse, fascinating and fun filled African holiday destination located in Southern most Africa and is the 24th largest country in the world. It is bordered to the south by the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, to the north by Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe and to the north east by Mozambique and Eswatini (formerly Swaziland). South Africa is the only country in the world with 3 capital cities; the executive, judicial and legislative branches of government based in Pretoria, Bloemfontein and Cape Town respectively.

With over 60 million people, the country is the world's 23rd most populous nation. About 80% are Black South Africans. The remaining population consists of Coloured South Africans, Asian and White South Africans which led to South Africa being termed as “The Rainbow Nation.” It is a multi-ethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, religions and languages. The country has up to 11 official languages where the main ones include Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans and English among several other unofficial but state recognised languages. The 80% majority of the population are Christians of various denominations alongside other religions like Islam and Hinduism. The South African cuisine is immensely diverse, and foods from many cultures are enjoyed by the community and marketed to tourists as well.

A subtropical location, moderated by the ocean on three sides of the country and the altitude of the interior plateau, account for the warm temperate conditions. Summers  in South Africa are from November to February bringing dry or wet weather, hot or humid temperatures, depending on where you are making it the peak season. Autumn in South Africa are from March to May as the weather stays warm across most of the country. Cool winters take over South Africa between the months of May and September with temperatures between 10-15C making it a low season in the country. Expectant pleasant springtime temperatures  are between September and November as there are some cold days and others are quite warm, especially as the season progresses.

South Africa is a home to a variety of landscapes and biomes, including deserts, wetlands, grasslands, mountains and subtropical forests. It is a holiday destination like no other! Looking for a beach holiday? South Africa has sunshine, sea and golden beaches. Keen for an escape into wine country? South Africa's Cape wine-lands are waiting to be explored. Seeking a safari adventure? South Africa is home to some of the world's most luxurious game reserves and lodges. There are hundreds of other things to do in South Africa which include visiting Table Mountain which is one of the oldest mountains in the world and the African penguins at the Boulders Beach Penguin Sanctuary. For the adrenaline junkies, travel to Bloukrans Bridge to visit the world's highest commercial bungee jump and cage dive with great white sharks in Durban. DAY 6  Apartheid Museum Tour

The Apartheid Museum opened in 2001 and is acknowledged as the pre-eminent museum in the world dealing with 20th Century South Africa, at the heart of which is the apartheid story.

Beginning in 1948, the white-elected National Party government implemented the policy of apartheid which turned 20 million people into second class citizens, damning them to a life of servitude, humiliation and abuse. Their liberation in 1994 with the election of Nelson Mandela, the prisoner who became president, is a climax in the saga of a nation's resistance, courage and fortitude.

The Apartheid Museum, the first of its kind, illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid. An architectural consortium, comprising several leading architectural firms, conceptualized the design of the building on a seven-hectare stand. The museum is a superb example of design, space and landscape offering the international community a unique South African experience.

The exhibits have been assembled and organized by a multi-disciplinary team of curators, film-makers, historians and designers. They include provocative film footage, photographs, text panels and artefacts illustrating the events and human stories that are part of the epic saga known as apartheid. For anyone wanting to understand and experience what apartheid South Africa was really like, a visit to the Apartheid Museum is fundamental.

The museum is a beacon of hope showing the world how South Africa is coming to terms with its oppressive past and working towards a future that all South Africans can call their own.
